mysql query_cache_size

Further to Sean's excellent presentation this evening; I had a look at the default config for mysql. mysql source code comes with a directory called "support-files" that (among other things) contains a set of recommended default config files. my-huge.cnf my-innodb-heavy-4G.cnf my-large.cnf my-medium.cnf my-small.cnf grepping for query_cache_size reveals that my-huge.cnf, my-innodb-heavy-4G.cnf, and my-large.cnf have the query_cache activated by default. Keep in mind these configs were originally created back in the day when 1G of memory was considered huge, I think most typical web servers can run with my-huge.cnf and a single user system (like a laptop) can use my-medium.cnf. The settings in my-huge.cnf look pretty reasonable and agree with the settings Sean was recommending. I mentioned that mysql creates .bin files when doing replication which is turned ON by default so the setting you should comment out is "log-bin" unless you are doing replication. This is especially true if you are doing lots of updates to your data. For example, I have a client that replicates a large access to database to mysql several times per day. The entire database is dropped and reloaded each time and this ended up exhausting many gigs of disk space just in mysql .bin files (and imagine how inefficient creating them was!). Just for interest sake, I checked some SUSE installs and the my-medium.cnf was the default so on a production web server this should be changed. The my-huge.cnf is included in the install but is not the default. Regards, John

IRCd sendq setting?

I'm hoping someone on this list has setup an IRC server before. I'm trying to setup this strange software (hudlite-server) which communicates with its clients over IRC channels. The problem is the hudlite server keeps flooding itself off ("Excess Flood"). I'm pretty rusty on my ircd.conf but I increased the sendq for that connection class to 5120000 (~5M) but it still keeps happening. Shaw Port 25

My Business account was just blocked from sending mail to my mail server. Talking to the techs, this applys to all Dynamic IP addresses, the only way around it is by getting a static IP. This according to the Tech I just got off the phone with. Can not order static IPs from tech support, have to contact business sales, which opens on monday..... Grrrr Kevin

Have a pretty nasty problem, and can't get hold of the guy that handles my Gentoo box..... And I'm pretty much lost on it, haven't been able to invest the time to learn it.... Now looks like the box has been hacked.... :/ So if you're up late, bored, want to make a couple of bucks, know Gentoo, email me directly.... :P

Shaw Business

While I don't have a dedicated-rep, Shaw Business customer service and techs are way better then on the Residental side. I call to complain about something, or ask to have something done, on my residental account, No, sorry we can't do that, or thats not possible. On the Business side, they just do it, no 15 min on hold, trying to get someone higher up, or someone who knows how to do a "push" on the modem, or what that even is (resending the config file to the modem). Business Side, I call the Sales or Tech number, no being put on hold, no IVR to wade threw, it just rings right through, sometimes longer when they are busy I suppose, but it just rings... When I was still living in Winnipeg, I had both DSL and Shaw, there was 50ms ping differences between pinging did.voip.les.net. My tests showed the DSL modem itself added 15ms delay in things. MTS with their DSL modems, they are technologly only able to upload at 640kb/s, download at 8Mbps, last time I had service, the fastest plan only used 512kb/s of that. Shaw's modems are 38/32Mbps Down/Up. So if they were to upgrade their infustructre, they could almost match the speed of a DS3. Kevin

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 12th. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: LAMP Performance Tuning LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl) applications are popular for many reasons. As a site grows, some work has to go into maintaining the various components of the architecture so that bottlenecks are eliminated. This presentation by Sean Walberg will go over many of the things to look for in the LAMP components of high volume websites, based on his experiences with b5media.com. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you (in groups) to the meeting room. Please try to arrive by about 7:15pm, so the meeting can start promptly at 7:30pm. Don't be late, or you may not get in. (But don't come too early either, since security may not be there to let you in before 7:15 or so.) Non-members may be required to show photo ID at the security desk. Shaw Static IPs

Yeah, depending on the Business plan your on, some of them include Static addresses. Correction, looking at Shaw's site, they have recently changed it (since when I looked at it in May) removing most of their Business plans (used to be 5, now there are 3). Two static IPs for $19.95/month. The reason to stick with Shaw, the reason I went to them in the first place, no need to dial-up with PPPoE, I hated that. Kevin

potential HTML/Flash job

If anyone knows any budding independent web artists, I may need some contract work done very soon for a client of mine. $500-$2000 or so, depending on final requirements and results. The job is a site redesign (mostly just the template / nav), perhaps revamping some of the content pages for a more polished look and integrating (maybe even taking) new pictures. It should be pretty easy / cookie-cutter. May have to submit a couple of mockups first. Also required is one or two Flash presentations integrating pictures and text to highlight new products. Artist must be capable of clean HTML / CSS *hand-coding* (or use a tool that produces neat human-readable HTML without inline CSS). Knowledge of PHP/Linux is a bonus. Site must look good on both IE and Firefox. The look required is clean / professional in both the HTML and Flash. If you know anyone who does small contract work like this, forward this on. Please reply by email. There may be future opportunities as well if I like what I see.
