Reminder Firefox release party this weekend!

Hello all, just one last reminder about the FireFox release party this weekend! Look for me in the bright blue FireFox T-Shirt! ======== Firefox release party! Firefox v1.0 was officially released last week and we are having a party! On Saturday November 20th starting at 8pm there will be an "official" Firefox release party at Bar Italia on Corydon ave. Bar Italia was selected for it's central location and the fact that it has free public WiFi access. Everyone who mentions the Office Assistant wants to get rid of it. And anyone enthusing about the wonders of Merlin is a good candidate for the target end of a fire-hose demonstration. To prevent the Office Assistant from appearing, right-click the Office Assistant character that's currently bugging you and click Properties on the shortcut menu. On the Options tab of the Office Assistant dialog box, clear the Use The Office Assistant check box. Click OK. What if you want the Office Assistant back? Simply choose Help > Show The Office Assistant, and the brute is back with you. Invoking the Office Assistant like this selects the Use The Office Assistant check box on the Options tab of the Office Assistant dialog box, so you'll need to clear this check box when you want peace and quiet again.

X client for older Mac

I'm messing around with networking and I found a couple of interesting things when connecting two Linux boxes together. I can ssh into one box and run a graphic program on it. I try this on an M$ box and System 8 Mac and no go. It says I need an X client. I gather from what I heard in the meetings Cygwin (however it's spelled) is the one for M$. From what I read the best (only) free alternative for the Mac is MI/X. The problem with MI/X is they don't support it any more and their ftp site does not allow access even though it is made available in their /pub area. Does anybody have a better recommendation for the Mac? Lock-up problem

The computer is a Dell D600, with an ATI Radeon Mobility 9000. The OS is SuSE 9.1, updated religiously. Today's installed RPMs include kernel-default-2.6.5-7, XFree86-4.3.99, fglrx-3.12.0 (ATI's driver), and KDE 3.3.1. Every now and then (sometimes once a day, sometimes once a month), the desktop stops responding. The cursor follows the mouse, but clicks and keypresses are ignored -- even Ctl-Alt-Delete, Ctl-Alt-Backspace, and Ctl-Alt-F1. This usually happens when I'm scrolling BoingBoing.net (a long page) in Konqueror, but I'm pretty sure that's not the only program that triggers the bug. The machine can be pinged, and I can slogin from elsewhere. When I do, I find X consuming at least 99.8% of CPU. Killing X causes a complete lock-up; it won't answer pings, and I have to power-cycle the computer. /var/log/messages contains nothing between the slogin and the restart. I've had the problem with KDE 3.2 and 3.1, with fglrx 3.11 and 3.9, and with XFree's default "radeon" driver. Have you seen behavior like this? Do you have any suggestions?

Sad news about Mel Seder

I just got a call from one of our MUUG members, who passed along some sad news about Mel Seder. (You may remember him as the gentleman who used to come to our meetings wearing a red fedora hat, and who needed to use an oxygen tank to help with his breathing in recent months.) Mel passed away yesterday. The funeral will be held at 2pm tomorrow (November 11th), at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, 561 Wellington Cres. On behalf of the MUUG board, I offer our condolences to Mel's family and friends. We'll miss you, Mel! -- Gilbert E.
