CD, VCD & DVD Burning

At a recent MUUG meeting someone was asking about burning VCDs (Video CDs). I believe the consensus at the meeting was that burning under Linux was comprised of a hodge-podge of various command line tools for converting video formats and burning making it quite difficult at best. I recently stumbled on the following software: http://www.k3b.org/ which seems to bring everything under one roof and claims to do CD, VCD, and DVD burning all in one application (it does not appear to be just a GUI front end to command line tools). However, I do not currently have a burner to test it with so I was hoping someone from the group could give it a whirl and report back on success? *BSD and PCMCIA networking

Am I missing something? > Do the other BSD variants handle PCMCIA differently? Well, just for the heck of it, I installed FreeBSD 4.7. It does have a system to handle PCMCIA events; see the man pages for pccardd and pccardc. It correctly handled my network card right out of the box.

Potential presentation

The guys who host the our Digital Civilization domain said they could do a presentation if asked. They run their ISP using Mandrake and a couple of other *NIX distros. First, add the following line to the /etc/modules.conf file... alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi Then, you need to build an "initrd" file for your kernel, to load the ide-scsi driver automatically on system restart. Check your kernel version number by looking in /boot for the vmlinuz-* file(s). For example, if you have a kernel called vmlinuz-2.4.18-19.7.x, you'll want a corresponding initrd file called initrd-2.4.18-19.7.x.img. (There may already be one if the installer figured you had other drivers that needed preloading.) You'd build (or rebuild) the initrd file as follows... mkinitrd -f /boot/initrd-2.4.18-19.7.x.img 2.4.18-19.7.x The -f option will force an existing file to be rebuilt. The next argument is the initrd file name, and the last argument is the kernel version number (so it knows which /lib/modules directory to get the modules from). If you've got multiple kernels installed, you may want to repeat the above for each of the kernel versions you've got. Certainly, you'll want to do it for the kernel that gets booted by default. Next, you have to tell your kernel boot loader (grub or lilo) to load that initrd file when it loads the kernel. If you're using grub (you should, as long as you're running a distribution that supports it), edit /etc/grub.conf (or /boot/grub/grub.conf, which is what /etc/grub.conf should point to), to add the following line... initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.18-19.7.x.img You would add that just after the kernel line for the corresponding kernel version (adjusting the kernel version as required), such as... kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-19.7.x ro root=/dev/hda2 (Of course, if you already had an initrd file in /boot, the grub.conf file may already mention it.) If you're using lilo instead, edit /etc/lilo.conf to add the following line... initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.18-19.7.x.img ... in the section for the appropriate kernel image, then run the "lilo" command to update the lilo boot record and map file. After that, you can reboot, and the driver should load automatically. If you're using grub as the boot loader, there's the added advantage that anytime you upgrade your kernel, it will automatically build an updated initrd file and update the grub.conf file, so there's very little you have to worry about. With lilo, unfortunately, you'll have to repeat the lilo configuration changes above manually each time you upgrade your kernel. -- Gilbert E. Second Meeting

As discussed at the December meeting, we are thinking of having a second, fairly informal 'roundtable' meeting. Since it was mid-December and most people were probably a little busy with the holidays, we didn't plan a meeting. But I think one in late January would be a good time. If people have any suggestions where to have the meeting and when, please bring them up on the roundtable list. shawn

MUUG Meeting, Jan 14, 7:30PM -- Mac OS X Update

Detillieux) The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, January 14. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Mac OS X Update This month, Douglas Hamilton, Apple Product Professional at the University of Manitoba, returns to give us an update on Mac OS X, a year after his last presentation. Many changes have occurred to Mac OS X over the past year (the current version is now 10.2.2). These changes include a revised kernel, greater security, improved development tools and greatly improved printing & networking technologies (including a new open standard). The presentation will cover the significant changes pertaining to the Unix underpinnings of Mac OS X, and how they have improved this operating system. This presentation will also cover the user interface changes which have been made to enable consumer (as opposed to power-user) access to the new Unix services included in Mac OS X. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30 PM on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our new meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you (in groups) to the meeting room.
