CD, VCD & DVD Burning

At a recent MUUG meeting someone was asking about burning VCDs (Video CDs). I believe the consensus at the meeting was that burning under Linux was comprised of a hodge-podge of various command line tools for converting video formats and burning making it quite difficult at best. I recently stumbled on the following software: http://www.k3b.org/ which seems to bring everything under one roof and claims to do CD, VCD, and DVD burning all in one application (it does not appear to be just a GUI front end to command line tools). However, I do not currently have a burner to test it with so I was hoping someone from the group could give it a whirl and report back on success? Well, the MUUG server has hit its connection limits for non-Canadian and non-Manitoban Canadian sites, but it's still accepting connections for sites within Manitoba, for now anyway. The bandwidth to commercial sites (including most ISP's in Manitoba) is not very good at the moment, and is rate-limited at the request of the U of M's network support group, and that likely won't improve until the new year. This is particularly true for FTP connections. However, for the time being, if you come in via HTTP or anonymous RSYNC protocols, you're still rate-limited, but with less contention. So, you'll get better transfer rates that way. (Keep this information to yourself and to those on the MUUG mailing lists, otherwise that advantage will quickly disappear!) -- Gilbert E. CUPS -- printing to a printer on the LAN

The following was clipped from the CUPS Manual ======================================= Automatic Configuration of Print Queues CUPS supports automatic client configuration of printers on the same subnet. To configure printers on the same subnet, do nothing. Each client should see the available printers within 30 seconds automatically. The printer and class lists are updated automatically as printers and servers are added or removed. ======================================= My downstairs computer has no printer attached to it. The only printer I have is connected to my upstairs computer. I'd like to be able to print jobs on the upstairs computer when I am logged into the downstairs computer. My question is; I couldn't/didn't find any examples in the manual that explained what has to be done in a "for dummies" fashion. RTL8139

Are there any RTL8139 NICs with a socket for a boot rom? I just bought one from a local retailer, and there's none on my card. I phoned the retailer and he said there are no RTL8139 NICs with a socket for a boot rom. Strange. I thought all NICs had them, that's why I didn't look at the card until I got home. If there are any RTL8139 NiCs with a socket for a boot rom, does anyone know where can I get one?

Red Hat null beta

Looks impressive so far. Asks if you want your install disks checked for errors. The text looks better too :-) My system just sits there when it tries to get an ethernet address for my NIC at boot up ... After 30 minutes I saw it wasn't going anywhere so I gave up. Windows can get on the internet no problem. I'll try another NIC tommorow to see if that solves the problem. MUUG Board - Call for Nominations (FINAL)

Howdy folks! Just a reminder to all MUUG members that the nominations deadline is fast approaching. If you want to be nominated, or nominate someone else, you need to let us know by September 24. Please follow the procedure outlined below, and make sure you provide us with all the information we need. Since the announcement below appeared in the September MUUG Lines newsletter, we've only received confirmation of one additional nomination, which is that of Shawn Wallbridge. Now, I know we had a couple more people come forward at the meeting, but we need to have a formal nomination in writing. So, please do so ASAP. Thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- MUUG Board Elections - Call for Nominations It's been quite some time since we've made a formal call for nominations, but it's long overdue. After adopting the MUUG by-laws in 1992, a formal election was held. The following two years, a call for nominations went out, but the end result was a board elected by acclamation. The records for the years that follow aren't clear, but it would appear that the same board members have stood by acclamation for quite some time. With the proposed amendments to the by-laws, on their 10th anniversary, we thought it appropriate to once again adhere to the election procedures outlined therein. The remaining three board members have all agreed to let their names stand again, so here is the initial list of nominees: Gilbert Detillieux Systems Analyst University of Manitoba Kevin McGregor Systems Specialist City of Winnipeg Doug Shewfelt Systems Specialist City of Winnipeg Of course, this list is just a starting point. Any member in good standing of the group can be nominated simply by getting the support of one other member. If you feel you would like to contribute to the group by running for a board position, please don't hesitate to do so. (In fact, we'd like to see the number of board members increase.) If you want to be nominated, or to nominate someone else, send a letter to the group's postal box or deliver it in person to a current board member. The letter must contain the name, title, and employer of the nominee, along with a short (100 word or so) biography, and must contain the signatures of the nominee and one other member. The letter must be received no later than September 24, 2002, which is 14 days prior to the October 8 meeting. Although the by-laws require that the nominations be done in writing, with signatures, you can speed up the process by also sending us e-mail to <election(a)muug.mb.ca>, with the above information, and sending the signed paper copy later. In this case, please include the e-mail address of both the nominee and the supporter on the CC: list of the message, so that all parties concerned have a record of the communication. I'd like to try burning some iso's and testing the newest and greatest distro by Red Hat. Should I be trying/downloading limbo or null ? Linux professional or advanced that is the question?

G'Day, I recieved an email today from RH which provided links for information on RH Advanced server. http://www.redhat.com/software/whichlinux.html is one link to provide some details. I am left with the impression that all the versions of RH I have installed 6.0 to 7.3 were never designed to be used in a company but just for small businesses and individuals. Advanced server is what I need for the enterprise. Wait a minute, I work for a regional telcommunication provider. I suspect our share holders don't consider the company a small business. I fear RH has created a crippled version of Linux, RH 7.3 and a full version, Advanced server. RH7.3 is the shareware version and Advanced server is the full version you pay throught the nose for. My experience with loading Oracle 8i seems to provide some validity for my perceptions. After 20 attempts at loading Oracle 8i on Linux 7.x using three different installation procedures I gave up. I left Oracle running on RH6.2 where everything works. I would really like to get SSH to work on 6.2 but I gave up after the 15 library change! I never did get the Oracle 8i to work completely in 7.x. I did get it to a point I could create a database but not all the tools worked. Towards the end of my database penance it was suggested I use Oracle 9i and it would work! Wait....that product has a both a greater hardware and software requirment. If I read about RH partnerships and key developments, they are all on Advanced server product. Am I getting paranoid? I have pushed to use linux as the alternative O/S. I am now questioning my convictions. I am seeing shades of gate's company. Tech support "oh you didn't purchase the advanced version, I am sorry we can't help you." "we don't support that service in the professional version, you will need a subscription for the Advanced version to get it to work correctly." Can I solicit some opinions? Sean
