CD, VCD & DVD Burning

At a recent MUUG meeting someone was asking about burning VCDs (Video CDs). I believe the consensus at the meeting was that burning under Linux was comprised of a hodge-podge of various command line tools for converting video formats and burning making it quite difficult at best. I recently stumbled on the following software: http://www.k3b.org/ which seems to bring everything under one roof and claims to do CD, VCD, and DVD burning all in one application (it does not appear to be just a GUI front end to command line tools). However, I do not currently have a burner to test it with so I was hoping someone from the group could give it a whirl and report back on success? Looking for MUUG Lines Back-issues

Calling all MUUG members who were around in the mid-90's: We're looking for paper copies of some of the back-issues of the MUUG Lines newsletter which we appear to be missing. Our goal is to eventually have a complete collection of back-issues available online for downloading. We've already had success in locating many back-issues, and have produced PDF files out of some of these by scanning the pages in and running them through OCR software. However, we're still missing the following issues: May 1994 Jun 1994 Nov 1994 Dec 1994 Jan 1995 Feb 1995 Dec 1995 Jan 1996 Feb 1996 If you were a MUUG member during that time, and have kept back-issues of MUUG Lines, please look for these. New kernel for Red Hat 8.0

I let the automated up2date agent on my panel do it's thing on both my PC's. I was able to boot one PC but not the other. It just sat there with the HD activity light on after I selected, actually it was defaulted for me, to load the newest kernel. I did a three finger salute and re-booted using the prior kernel version. I'd like to be running the newer version and am wondering if installing the new version by using the RPM for it would be easier than re-installing 8.0 and letting Red Hat go out and do it's own update of the kernel again. query on mrtg ...

G'day eh ... I've been running mrtg for a little while now on a machine at work .. it's logging my ethernet traffic and another couple of boxes just fine ... but ... I'm not sure how to change a setting and can't seem to find any reference to it that makes sense ... so I'll ask ... during peak transfer rates, the graph will be automatically scaled so it displays the full range of the transfer rates (ie: it'll show 900Kbps peaked) .. normally, my bandwidth utilization on an idle system is anywhere from 3K to 30K depending on the application being used (don't ask!) ... the problem then, when it peaks, it will make the rest of the graph utilization very small (ie: scaled down) to fit in the large transfer rate -- which makes it very difficult to visualize the now small differences. What I'm looking for is to cap the transfer rate on a specific image (target) so that I can more easily identify it's normal running state and the small effects during the course of a day/week (regardless of it's peak transfer rates) .... I've seen some references to items that sound similar, but cannot easily identify which ones might be pertinent ... rather than going through all the different permutations and trying them out on a day by day basis, anyone have any ideas as to what options I might be able to use to accomplish this?? Router Config Confuses me

D-Link DI-701 I have three open ports that I added using the vserv command of my router's software. I can use all the other main ports ie 80, 25 and various IM programs and I never had to go in and add these ports to the open list. The show command doesn't show ports 80 or 25 as being open. Sendmail or nameserver problems?

After setting up chroot jail, I noticed a problem with my mail inbound and outbound for sub-domains. I have multiple domains on my server, some with sub-domians. The primary domain mail traffic is not effected by this latest problem, just the sub-domains. The system is runing RH 7.1. Users of the sub-domains access their mail via Squirrel mail. Here's an example of one of my DNS zone entries: $TTL 3D @ IN SOA ns1.manitobamall.net. root.manitobamall.net. Henry" <rayhenry(a)mts.net> <rhenry(a)maac.manitobamall.net> 2 b host map: lookup (maac.manitobamall.net): deferred So, the mail appears to be be arriving at my server, and then being "deferred". Attempts to force the queue (/usr/lib/sendmail -v -q) result in: Running /var/spool/mqueue/g9ELg9X01184 (sequence 1 of 4) <rhenry(a)maac.manitobamall.net>... maac.manitobamall.net: Name server timeout <rhenry(a)maac.manitobamall.net>... Transient parse error -- message queued for future delivery Last time I *know* that mail for the sub-domains was working was last weekend, so this has just come up since then. No changes have been made to sendmail or DNS entries. The only changes on the server was to set up the chroot jail stuff, and I can't see how that would effect this... What am I missing????? Red Hat Road Tour 2002

Red Hat has some guys in an rv touring around starting October 31. Maybe they might be persuaded to visit MUUG ? Maybe they'll bring some free goodies. Anyway, we'll get to tell them what we like/dislike about Red Hat and how to run Red Hat. They need our advice! It's the best advice they can get and I'm sure we'll enjoy giving it to them!

New Video Card

Its time to upgrade the linux box to go with a new RH 8.0 install. High end gaming performance (frame rate) is not required, but would like to run at 1600x1200x24bit colour (at least) for vector and bit map graphics editting. Any opinions on a good video card (re: stable linux drivers).
