CD, VCD & DVD Burning

At a recent MUUG meeting someone was asking about burning VCDs (Video CDs). I believe the consensus at the meeting was that burning under Linux was comprised of a hodge-podge of various command line tools for converting video formats and burning making it quite difficult at best. I recently stumbled on the following software: http://www.k3b.org/ which seems to bring everything under one roof and claims to do CD, VCD, and DVD burning all in one application (it does not appear to be just a GUI front end to command line tools). However, I do not currently have a burner to test it with so I was hoping someone from the group could give it a whirl and report back on success? "It was a purely random event," he said, adding that hardware failures are rare. "This has never happened before, and it will likely never happen again." Although the bank's credit card system "stayed on the air pretty much all day," and its debit card system also continued to function "intermittently," Mr. Livingston said, everything else went down. This included its telephone and Internet banking operations, in-branch computer systems and approximately 2,000 automated banking machines. Gilbert's theory sounds reasonable, especially since the credit card system was working for most of the time. I assume that the credit card system has an independent account database. - Doug

TD network failure

Does anyone have any specifics as to why the Toronto Dominion Bank had that major failure this Saturday, October 27 ? All I hear in the media is that it was some kind of 'hardware' failure. Nothing specific said. I'd really like to know what happened to crash their whole system. I thought the banks had 'bullet-proof' networks what with all those billions of dollars they have to spend.

Tape Backup Software, comments.

I am looking for Linux tape back-up software for a small network of mixed OS PC's. I have looked at Amanada, Arkeia, and Tolis BRU. I am especially looking for support for HP "One Button Disaster Recovery" (OBDR), and centralized network backup. I have followed the Amanda mailing list and have feel for it's use. Are there any pros/cons to Arkeia and BRU ?

Red Hat 7.2 official launch

Here's the official word from Red Hat... The launch date is set to be October 22nd, at 8:00am EST (-5/GMT). Hopefully, we'll be completely in synch with their site by that morning. Red Hat 7.2 review from ZDnet

Further to the October roundtable discussion about the imminent release of Red Hat 7.2, here's the ZDnet review I mentioned, which may be of interest to you... http://www.zdnet.com/products/stories/reviews/0,4161,2816836,00.html It mentions some of the key new features in this release, such as GRUB, ext3, and a new version of Gnome. (BTW, still no word on the actual release date, but it's still sounding likely to be sometime between the 15th and the 22nd.)
