Hi there -- well, I'm getting frustrated with my current registrar " domainsatcost.ca" ... whom I've used for many years.
They recently implemented an automatic renewal for all domains. Meaning, I get an email in my inbox saying I've been billed x$ for my domains that are 45 days from expiring.
I understand the reasoning behind it, (ie: DAU's) but I certainly don't agree with being billed without a pre-notice invoice of some type. (They pointed out that I have the option of logging onto the site and looking at my expiry date to find out when I would get billed -- bah -- not the point).
Since they have no opt-out option and have no other option to not be renewed automatically, I am looking at other registrars to send my small needs, referrals, to.
What do you guys know of for decent registrars for CA domains that you'd recommend? that don't have draconian policies ...
Thanks.
Dan.
I've been using namespro.ca for 10 years now, and never had any problems...

Another vote for namecheap. Moved over from GoDaddy a few years ago and I really like them.
Whatever you do, stay away from netfirms. They'll suspend domains if you don't respond to the verification emails.

I don't do autorenew, but they love to email me 90/60/30 days before renewal for a reminder.

Actually, it is an ICAN policy.

As of January 1, 2014, ICANN requires all accredited registrars to verify their new contact information. You can read about ICANN's new policy at: http://www.icann.org/en/resources/registrars/raa/approved-with-specs-27jun13... .

It was my understanding that this was a CIRA policy, that the registrar had to contact the admin contact at least once per year to confirm ownership and a valid contact.
I've had MTS suspend customers 10+ year domains that had so-and-so@mts.net contacts that have not existed in years. (including several .net and .com domains that "apparently are under the same rules")

This was a .org. And same kind of idea -- the contact was a shaw address that got cancelled.
The emails I get from other registrars are more along the lines of "we have to contact you once a year, here is what we have on file, if it is wrong please change it otherwise ignore this message". Not a domain dead man switch.

I've been using EasyDNS for years, and remain thrilled with their service, their policies, their product... everything but their price, and even that isn't too terrible for what you get. I think they have some sort of referral discount program, but am not certain. -Adam

For super cost, I've been happy with 10dollar.ca for many years. Last I checked they didn't support submitting AAAA glue records through, though I think I last asked a year ago

If you want to keep it local, me (my company) is a OpenSRS reseller since 2001. My pricing is fairly competitive, but bit less so on .ca's (for some strange reason OpenSRS seems to charge more than others). I basically just try to make $3-$4.50 above my cost per domain. SSL certs too. If you wanted to arrange some sort of referral/reseller idea, I'm open to that.
You get easy management through the OpenSRS end-user management console, and I do believe they give free DNS hosting now too (I don't use it personally).
I renew based on policies you lay out in advance, so you can direct what you want to do with your renewals.
Talk to me at the next meeting if you're interested (or sooner by email).
