I was going to switch internet providers recently, then I realized that I would have to change my email address and notify dozens or hundreds of people.
Is there a [cheap] way to get a permanent email address?
I seem to recall getting a .mb address in the early days of internet. I then used a university address and subsequently used an email address from providers. Is there a way to look up this old email address (if it exists?)

You can register your own domain for peanuts per year and point it at a gmail account for free.

Furthermore, not only can you re-direct mail targetting your own address at your own domain to your Gmail/Yahoo/Hotmail address, but you can also configure your Gmail/Yahoo/Hotmail account to use your own address at your own domain as the "from" address on outgoing mail.
Most people don't know about this latter feature, and it just makes you look so much better if your e-mails also appear to be coming from your own address at your own domain.
