After reading up on some of the links passed around, and some more googling, I managed to convert an AVI into a VCD that played fine on mv DVD player. I posted a short writeup, along with a link to some scripts:

I tried a sample bin cue dual file. My DVD player complained about a format error. Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait until I can afford a different burner or maybe pick up a DVD burner.
