Follow-up, after taking out my "weird" vm settings and rebooting into 3.12 the system seemed fine for a day and then hit the bug again while I was using it. Got some further data this time. Also, I've booted a few times into 3.11 again and it seems 100% stable for days and hasn't shown the bug once.

I do find it odd that I haven't seen more hits regarding this, either in google or the usual places like ubuntu bugz and kernel bugs / LKML.
