Have you tried using Control-H instead of the backspace key? Odds are you just need a new entry in your termcap to handle the SCOANSI line discipline.

Apparently SCO uses something called SCOANSI? Mostly it seems to be compatible but any of the SCO menu driven stuff is unreadable and backspace is broken.
