MUUG Meeting, Tuesday, Mar 5, 7:30pm (Date Change, In-person/Hybrid Meeting) -- Fluentd

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting IN PERSON, on Tuesday, March 5th, at 7:30pm. Yes, that's a week early, i.e. the FIRST Tuesday of the month... Fluentd Alberto Abrao will present and demo fluentd. According to their website, "Fluentd is an open source data collector for unified logging layer." Fluentd is lightweight enough that you can host it on a Raspberry Pi or similar low-end device. The presentation will walk us through … [View More]the configuration of a machine that will serve as a "log aggregator," and a couple of others that will send their logs to it. All logs will stay in plain text, as the "Gods of UNIX" intended. Where to find the Meeting: Fortress Software Inc., 350 Keewatin St -- Unit #2 We have a new in-person meeting location now! Brad Vokey has graciously let us use his work office for our next in-person meeting. The meeting room will be open by 7:00 pm, with the actual meeting starting at 7:30 pm. If driving, enter the lot using the most north east entrance and drive around to the south west corner of the building (see route in map detail on poster linked below). You can use any of the free, ample, and safe parking spots that say "reserved" in front of units #1 through #4 before entering unit #2. Bus stops #30814 and #30880 (route 77) are only 150 meters away. The last bus leaves for Polo Park at 10:15 pm and for Garden City at 10:31 pm. Logan Ave. bus routes #19, #26, and #27 are a 600 meter (8 minute) walk to the south. For those unable or preferring not to attend in person, the meeting will also be available online, using BBB as usual. Wifi recommendations

I have a Netgear Orbi mesh (1 base + 1 satellite) in my house. They're about 6 years old and don't support Wifi 6 (802.11ax?). I've noticed that in my basement it works pretty well, but upstairs the effective data rate drops off VERY quickly when I move away from the router (satellite). I figure this is because of the large number of wifi routers in my neighbourhood competing for the same bandwidth. Would upgrading to a Wifi 6-capable router help? Any other suggestions?

Cat 6 cable

What's the going price for a 1000' box of Cat 6 cable? Is there a good place to buy it in Winnipeg, or order online? I'm thinking of running some network cable in my house, most likely 1 GbE. I had previously used Cat 5E. Should I stick with that instead of 6?

Bridging the "Giga" Bell Modem for Fibre

Hello everyome, following up on our last meeting's conversation about the Bell "Giga Hub" modem, I would like to ask if someone knows a way to properly set it to "bridge mode". The modem web interface provides a "Advanced DMZ" mode. There, one is able to provide a MAC Address of an interface who'd be receive external IP as the leased address after a DHCP request. How to set up and use static IP from Rogers/Shaw

I'm helping out someone with a Shaw Business account, and they have a static IP they'd like to set up and use for one specific server. So generally, how do you set this up? Shaw forwards traffic with that static IP (and the dynamic one, too) to the router, and then... Enable the DMZ feature of the router and set the IP address of the server to the static one from Shaw and it just works? Or is there some other work to do? Thanks for any help, Kevin

DHCP lease renewal on Debian/Ubuntu

Is there a way to force the DHCP client on Debian/Ubuntu to renew its lease ahead of time? For example, if the lease duration is a week, but you want the client to refresh the list of DNS servers immediately. Will "netplan apply" do it? Or "systemctl restart systemd-networkd"? That seems extreme; I don't want a network/service interruption -- things like IP address/netmask/gateway won't change in the case I'm thinking of but other configuration details may need updating.
