The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, January 8. The meeting topic for this month is as
follows:
Test Driving oVirt with Nested KVM
oVirt is a KVM based virtualization solution by Red Hat which
works on a data-centre / multi-server scale. Mark Jenkins will
show that you don't need a rack full of servers or a SAN to try it
out or simulate a production environment. The secret sauce for
this is nested KVM.
RTFM: systemctl(1)
Most Linux distros have now adopted systemd as the new init
process. Gilbert Detillieux will introduce the very basics of
using systemctl(1) to control daemons in a systemd-based
environment.
The group holds its meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every
month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
MUUG member to attend.

Please note our meeting location for this month: *Room 1M28*
Manitoba Hall, University of Winnipeg, entrance on Ellice Ave.
between Spence and Balmoral St.
Parking is available on the surrounding streets and in the lots
on nearby streets. Look for signage once you're at the building,
or ask a security guard.

Upgraded some boxes to Fedora 29 and after a while I came across this bit
of fun: the old network-scripts ifcfg style of configuring your network
interfaces is deprecated and will be removed from Fedora eventually. I
checked and Ubuntu seems to have done the same (actually, they are moving
faster). This means RHEL/CentOS will have this in the near future also.
The new "solution" is to use NetworkManager (of course). Strike another
win for the "systemd crowd", and another loss for any advanced admin
running servers with moderately complex, mostly static, network setups.
So we'll all have to convert our ifcfg setups to NM format, which of
course won't have a 1-for-1 replacement for every option. And we'll have
to then figure out how to fight NM not to do anything automatically. And
we'll (for many people, but not all) be forced to have NMd running in the
background always and forever, even on static setups.
Oh joy.
Here's some bz ranting (no, the guy isn't me, but could be!)
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1643763
At least it looks like it'll be in deprecated mode in Fedora for a few
versions so one is not forced to change immediately. Ubuntu users may not
be so lucky. As for now, my box had the networks come up just fine as
usual when I upgraded, and I don't even have the NM rpms installed at all.
But the migration will have to come sooner rather than later...
ifup enp5s0.4
WARN : [ifup] You are using 'ifup' script provided by 'network-scripts', which are now deprecated.
WARN : [ifup] 'network-scripts' will be removed from distribution in near future.
WARN : [ifup] It is advised to switch to 'NetworkManager' instead - it provides 'ifup/ifdown' scripts as well.
They are ramming though pro-corporate policy. Proper public "consultation"
periods are so short as to be impossible. Now several consumer interest
groups are boycotting the process and calling them out publicly.
Commissioner Miner (@fanCRTCProfling) tweeted at 4:11 PM on Fri, Nov 30,
2018:
.@doctorow, Interesting thing happening at the Canadian Telecom Regulator
(CRTC). A first.
There is a boycott from most all the major Canadian consumer and public
interest groups going on. Background below:

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, December 11. The meeting topic for this month is as
follows:
RTFM: time
A short demonstration of the Unix time(1) command by Wyatt
Zacharias. Time is used to determine the duration of execution
of a particular command.
Round-table, Mingling and Munchies
As 2018 draws to a close, MUUG will continue our recent tradition
of turning the December meeting into more of a social event.
*Bring your favourite gadget!*
We will have the usual round-table session, followed by the RTFM
presentation (see above), then a gadget show & tell, and finally,
some time for mingling, eating, and drinking.
*This will be a pot-luck snack event.*
Cookies and pop will be provided by MUUG, but members are encouraged
to bring their own finger food to sample and share. Feel free to
bring your own drink as well if you want something particular - just
remember that we don't have a liquor license!
Winnipeg Harvest Food Drive
Also as in previous years, we will combine our pot luck with a
food drive for Winnipeg Harvest. Cash donations are preferred this
year as every $1 Winnipeg Harvest receives, they are able to pick
up and deliver $20 worth of groceries.
*Any member who donates at least $1 or brings at least 1 food item
will be given an entry into the door prize draw!*
Winnipeg Harvest has information about what they're looking for on
their website:

The group holds its meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every

August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
