Hey MUUG users, long time admirer here. Myself and Mike Himbeault from the
City of Winnipeg are creating a AWS user group after some discussions after
The Long Con and our first free(!), free pizza(!) event is *December 17th *
at* 6PM *at the *St. Boniface Library*.
You can register, see the talk details, and see the schedule at the
eventbrite :
https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/winnipeg-aws-user-group-december-meetup-tickets…
We're doing two talks: S3 + CloudFront for static web content and exploring
Elastic Beanstalk. Afterwards we're heading to a nearby pub for further
discussion. Should be a fun time!
There's going to be some veteran AWS users there who love to talk shop and
did .I mention that there will be free pizza? I hope to see a few of you
out there!

For those of you interested in my presentation last night on setting up
a captive portal, I've made my slides available on the MUUG web site...
https://muug.ca/meetings/18-19.html#nov
There are web links on the slides to all the sources I used as I was
learning how to set this up, which may be helpful to you.
Share and enjoy!

Hey there, we're looking to find more folks for our team.
Specifically security focused 'infrastructure specialists' to build and
deploy security services at 'enterprise' scale.
We are growing the practice as well as tackling some very unique
challenges so this is a great time to try something different or suffer
my presence on a more frequent basis.
This kind of thing doesn't come up often and we'd very much like to get
the word out there for local folks (security talent isn't just limited
to Toronto and Vancouver).
As a technical lead in this role, I'd be happy to field any questions
and if you'd like to hear more about the role please get in touch.

Please forward this along to anyone you think would be interested,
despite my graylisting (consider it a test) I definitely would like to
hear from you!

P.S. X-Posting to Skullspace as well...
The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, November 13. The meeting topic for this month is as
follows:
Build an IP Captive Portal from Scratch
(For Fun and Education, but Not for Profit)
Love 'em or hate 'em, captive portals are widely used to restrict
Internet access to authorized users. What if you need to set one
up, but all the "canned" solutions aren't quite right for your use
case? This presentation by Gilbert Detillieux will show you the
various components that make up a captive portal, and how you can
set one up from scratch, using Linux Netfilter/iptables, the
Apache web server, ISC DHCPD and BIND, and some custom back-end
scripting.
RTFM: date
The lowly date(1) command has been a fixture of UNIX systems
from the very early days. Yet there may be features in this
command that would surprise you. Adam Thompson will present this
RTFM.
The group holds its meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every
month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
MUUG member to attend.
*******************************************************************
Please note our new meeting location for this month: *Room 1M28*
Manitoba Hall, University of Winnipeg, entrance on Ellice Ave.
between Spence and Balmoral St.
Parking is available on the surrounding streets and in the lots
on nearby streets. Look for signage once you're at the building,
or ask a security guard.
