I walked into a MUUG meeting a few months back and someone was playing
an online game where you have to build a machine to cross a divide.
It looked fun but I don't know what it was called.
Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I meant to bring this up at the last meeting. Linux Magazine went under a
few months ago and sold their subscriber base to Linux Pro Mag, which is
European-based. I've been reading Linux Mag for a few months now and I
think it's even better than Linux Mag. Well worth 3 issues for $10 (US).
I just noticed while renewing that they are having a special trial, which
is a really good deal so I thought I'd pass it on. Just make sure if you
don't like it that you cancel in 3 months or you …

and it's quite pricey!

The DOCSIS modems have a configurable CPE (IP addresses), if its set to 2,
it will lease 2 IPs without needing to be power cycled, If it is set to 1
In order to connect a 2nd/different device, either have Shaw add the 2nd
IP, Or power cycle the modem to release the IP/MAC address the modem has in
the ARP cache - Going this route, you can still can only have 1 active IP
from Shaw.
The Terayon modems have no IP limit - can pull as many as you want.
Its not a memory thing in the DOCSIS …

IP addresses, it's the config file the modem has, specs from Motorla say
that the modem will support 32 IP addresses, Shaw's system has a maximum of
8 IP addresses, but a residential account only has 1 or 2 included in the
price.
10Mbps hub, unlikely to see a speed change on just HighSpeed, Extreme,
yeah, you'll see your speeds not get as fast as they could. The other thing
to consider when using a hub is you don't have full-duplex traffic, so you
can see a speed drop from that as well, more noticeable on Extreme.

This should be simple, but for some reason I can't get it working.
My present setup:
shaw cable modem ----> linux box / iptables ----> airport extreme ----> a
happy group of Mac & PCs, some wired, some wireless
Problem:
My broker supplies me with software for streaming quotes that must run on XP
and not be behind a firewall.
Solution (I thought):
Use my old Allied Telesyn CentreCOM MR815T hub/repeater, and take advantage
of the fact that Shaw will issue 2 IPs.
shaw cable modem --…
[View More]--> hub
port 1 |---------> linux box / iptables ---->
etc, as before
port 2 |---------> promiscuous XP box
If I connect either the network (my present system) or the XP box directly
to the cable modem, each seems to work. If I connect either of these
through the hub, it no longer works. A diode will light up showing the
connection of a PC to a particular port, but will not light up when I plug
in the ethernet cable from the cable modem. The hub will indicate activity
when an attempt is made to access the internet, but no activity is
registered on the cable modem.
I have used different ports on the hub, 3 different ethernet cables to
connect the modem to the hub, and at times I have rebooted the modem or the
PC attached to the hub (various permutations of these actions).
The hub has 8 ports - the first 7 are labelled with an "X" which I believe
means MDI-X (crossover) configuration to plug a PC into. Port 8 has a
switch to select MDI or MDI-X. What should I plug the modem into? (I have
tried both).

Just out of curiosity, what sort of bandwidth would you consider 'decent'?
Also, a year's worth of hosting at Dreamhost (http://www.dreamhost.com/) is
US$120, IIRC, which isn't far off. They are also having a special where if
you get a …
[View More]domain name registration through them you get six months of
hosting free. Check their site for details.

Hello,
I would like to find a Winnipeg hosting business that has a decent
Internet pipe that would give me a public IP (or two) and a network
connection and let me plop a server in their secure server room.
Even if I didn't have a public IP, but had a couple hostnames that
llinked to dynamic IP's that would be fine too (does that make
sense?).
I would be willing to pay $10 a month for the service.

In my presentation last month I mentioned SUSE Studio which I understand
is a custom linux build service similar to rPath.
If you are interested in such things they are looking for beta testers.
Please read the email below for more information.

Hello,
I've posted it here:
http://knoppmyth.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=117916#117916
...but thought I would send an email to the round table as well.
I've been a (knopp)mythtv users for 3 years now.
We are currently using:
-27 inch Toshiba CRT TV
-Houpauge PVR250 tuner
-Canadian Shaw digital TV
What we're planning on doing is upgrading to a large LCD TV. Probably this one:
Sharp Aquos 1080p 42" Widescreen LCD HDTV** (LC42D65)
http://tinyurl.com/sharpLC42D65
I'm looking for advice from …
[View More]Canadians or people knowledgeable about
Canadian broadcasting regarding how to best use MythTV with Shaw
digital (HD)TV and a HD LCD TV. If you could take the time to offer
help I would really appreciate it. My family and I would rather stay
with MythTV then go to Shaw's proprietary HDPVR.

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, December 9. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Round-table, Gadget Showcase and Mix & Mingle
With the usually active holiday season approaching, we'll take
things at a more relaxed pace. So, we'll give more time for the
round-table discussion (rather than cutting it short as we had to
last month), then instead of a very short coffee break, we'll have
a more laid-back …
[View More]mingler with some holiday treats and more time for
informal discussion.
This will also be a geek gadget showcase! So, if you've got a cool
(but portable) geek gadget to show off, bring it to the meeting.
Want to show off that new Eee PC, or that iPhone, OpenMoko phone,
or whatever new gadget? Bring it along! Does it run some flavour
of UNIX or Linux? Even better. Is it open source? Better still!
We'll have time to show some things during the round-table
discussion, if you need the data projector, or you can just show
your gadget to small groups in the later part of the evening.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
MUUG member to attend.
**********************************************************************
Please note our meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave.
(between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to
sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you
(in groups) to the meeting room. Please try to arrive by about 7:15pm,
so the meeting can start promptly at 7:30pm. Don't be late, or you may
not get in. (But don't come too early either, since security may not
be there to let you in before 7:15 or so.) Non-members may be required
to show photo ID at the security desk.
Limited parking is available for free on the street, either on Ellice
Ave. or on some of the intersecting streets. Indoor parking is also
available nearby, at Portage Place, for $3.00 for the evening. Bicycle
parking is available in a bike rack under video surveillance located
behind the building on Webb Place.
