Fedora mirror useless for yum

The MUUG mirror appears to be useless for using for yum updates. Running yum against it works for a while but often dies with: ---> Downloading header for ntp to pack into transaction set. ftp://ftp.muug.mb.ca/mirror/.1/fedora/linux/core/updates/4/i386/ntp-4.2.0.a.20050816-0.FC4.i386.rpm: [Errno 4] IOError: [Errno ftp error] [Errno ftp error] 502 Command REST not allowed by policy. Trying other mirror. It looks like REST is denied by ftp.muug.mb.ca and yum doesn't seem to provide a way to disable using REST. Any chance the server could be made to allow this? Or any chance of mirroring it via http too?

experiences with 64-bit virtualisation?

I'm thinking of putting together a system that can run both 32-bit (i686) and 64-bit (x86_64) versions of a few different Linux distros, as well as Windows XP (or maybe Vista) in a virtualised environment. The idea is to be able to build and test software for several Linux distros, as well as run a few required Windows applications. Do any of you have experience with running such a mix of virtual machines, and how would you recommend doing it? I noticed from VMware's web site that they claim to support such a mix. Are their others? How well do they work? Also, VMware seems to have a fairly limited set of Linux systems that can serve as host OS -- notably they support RHEL but not Fedora. Has anyone successfully used VMware under Fedora or under an RHEL clone system? Thanks for any advice you can provide. -- Gilles R. FC5 kernel rpm

Can the FC5 users out there do me a favor? Check your yum cache for the 2174 kernel-smp rpm: find /var/cache/yum/ | egrep 'kernel-smp.*2174.*rpm' If you have it, could you email it to me, or put in on the web somewhere, or arrange with me to setup FTP space for you? I desperately need this package as it's now 2 versions behind and so is no longer on the mirrors or anywhere I can find @redhat.com. I can't use 2187 as it has a horrible e1000 panic bug (206744), and I don't yet know if 2200 fixes it. I do know that 2174 is stable and I need to put it on another box. Thanks!

Video Overlay cropped

I finally have a MythTv box up and running with everything mostly working. I have one final problem which I can not solve. When any video is played back on the box it displays "cropped". In other words, the video shows only about the top-left 2/3 of the video. It doesn't matter if its full screen or in a window. Both mplayer and xine exhibit the same behavior and it happens with both live video and recorded clips. Adjusting the video capture resolution does not make a difference. I'm almost certain there must be a video overlay setting or something but having spent most of the weekend searching I'm mystified. Any tips? John

Evolution in Ubuntu

How can I stop Evolution (and a bunch of other programs) from popping up every time I log into my user account under Ubuntu (KDE is the window manager)? It is not consistant but it gets annoying when it happens. I've checked the autostart stuff (as far as I can tell I got them all) and there is nothing there. In fact KDE complains about a malformed autorun file. In the end I want a minimal number of programs (nothing) to autorun. FYI, ps shows a larger number of programs running than it did for Fedora (but it's still faster). This time both juk and evolution are in the list.
