MUUG mirror site problems

Some of you may have noticed that we've been having some problems with the MUUG mirror site being a bit out of date lately. Red Hat updates had stopped coming in as of about mid-week last week. It turns out that the disk that held the redhat mirror was full. I cleared up a gigabyte yesterday by removing the Red Hat 9 documentation *.iso images, and that seems to have gotten things moving again. So, if you've been relying on this mirror for your updates, now would be a good time to grab them. The problem now is the disk with the debian and sunsite mirrors is full. It had a free gigabyte yesterday, so it's a recent problem. I'm not sure where would be the best place to prune on that disk, so I'll leave it for Gilbert to handle when he gets back on Monday. -- Gilles R. Linux AIC 7890 RAID 5 ?

I have a Dell poweredge 6300 box here with an AIC 7890 SCSI controller. How do I configure it to treat all the drives hooked up to it as a single RAID 5 set? In other words, a hardware RAID set. Or is this controller _just_ a SCSI controller and RAID is the job of a different card? If it is the job of a different card, then I believe Linux will do software RAID correct? If that is the case, do I setup the system with only a single drive first then convert it to RAID after the install? I can't seem to see any way to tell cfdisk to treat the drives as anything but single drives. I'm mighty confused as to how to accomplish RAID 5 under Linux. This is Slackware 9.1 btw. Linux colour lazer printer

I'm giving up on ink-jet printers. The ink is just too expensive. I was wondering if anyone out there could advise me on a good colour lazer printer to operate with Linux. I was thinking around $250. Best Buy had one for $150, but I suspect it might be a bit too cheap. I know nothing of lazer printers except they are reputed to be fast. Do they require expensive paper? Do the lazer diodes last very long? Are any of them parrallel port? Any advise would be most welcome.

Month name to number, and sendmail

Last night a couple of questions came up (both from Steve, I think). The first is for a filter that converts a month name to a month number from within an ls listing. Locale is probably the most correct approach, but BFI works great too: ls -l | perl -p -e '@m=qw/Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec/; for ($i=0; $i<@m; $i++){ s/\b$m[$i]\b/$i+1/e}' And, how to generate an email from the command line with custom from/reply-to headers, use sendmail -t and write down the headers yourself: /usr/lib/sendmail -t <<MAIL From: "Angry Taxpayer" <testing(a)taxpayer.com> To: "Sean" <sean(a)ertw.com> Reply-To: "Paul Martin" <paulm(a)canadianrulingparty.gc.ca> Subject: Tax cuts Dear Sir, I pay too much in tax Tx MAIL -- Sean A. Tip in the newsletter

I tried the tip in the newsletter about redirecting the updates to the MUUG site. I updated today. It took less than 30 seconds (as opposed to an hour and a bit). It took a bit to figure out how to manually edit the file rather than use patch. The whole thing turned out to be really simple. Just replace two URLs. Thanks guys... Later Mike P.S. RH 9 -> Fedora upgrade through Yum... Success!

Just a short note from Fedora Core 1 on a box that was previously RH 9. Upgrade steps are simple -- no CDs necessary, no reboots needed other than to bring up your new kernel. Install Yum. Edit /etc/yum.conf to point to a Fedora mirror (use Gilbert's patches, but change $releasever to 1) Run "yum upgrade" Reboot into your new kernel That's a bit of a stretch. I had to delete one rpm that was causing a dependency failure, but it wasn't necessary anyway. I also had to edit /boot/grub/grub.conf to default to the new kernel (not sure if that was the upgrade that defaulted it to the old one). And, more strangely, my eth0 didn't work even though it was detected (wouldn't receive packets even though they were being sent). eth1 worked fine, though. I noticed Fedora has some hardware management stuff that comes up on boot, this behaviour is classic interrupt stomping. Enjoy. Sean -- Sean A. Walberg <sean(a)ertw.com> http://www.ertw.com
