CD, VCD & DVD Burning

At a recent MUUG meeting someone was asking about burning VCDs (Video CDs). I believe the consensus at the meeting was that burning under Linux was comprised of a hodge-podge of various command line tools for converting video formats and burning making it quite difficult at best. I recently stumbled on the following software: http://www.k3b.org/ which seems to bring everything under one roof and claims to do CD, VCD, and DVD burning all in one application (it does not appear to be just a GUI front end to command line tools). However, I do not currently have a burner to test it with so I was hoping someone from the group could give it a whirl and report back on success? To delete an entry do I merely delete from the beginning of a title section to just before the the next title section starts? Your first assumption is right. The "title" keyword begins a new section, and the following lines (indented for clarity) are all part of that same section, so you would delete them all together. However, if those lines were created by the installation of a particular kernel RPM, the removal of that RPM (with "rpm -e") would also modify the grub.conf file accordingly. It's all a question of how/why you want those lines removed, but under normal circumstances, you rarely have to edit grub.conf yourself under Red Hat Linux. -- Gilbert E. Print Systems

I'm using Red Hat 7.3 and KDE with a Epson C80 printer When I print I get a gui window on the screen and one of the sections called print systems asks me if I want to use one of the following; CUPS Print through an external program (generic) Generic UNIX LPD print system (default) LPR/LPRng Print System RLPR environment (Remote LPD server) What are all these things? Is there a preferred one? Red Hat 7.3 Installation on a XP Box

My friend wants to try Linux on his brand new 2.2 Ghz P4. He has a DSL connection to the internet from Manitoba Telecom (our provincial phone company). He is running Windows XP. Is there anything to watch out for when doing the install? Could someone tell me how to create an image file? I guess it would be FAT12 or ext2fs. Like Red Hat's boot.img. All I can find on the net is stuff for creating jpegs or gifs. I don't necessarily want to boot the image either. There must be some simple utility in Linux that does this, only I don't know which one.

Has Limbo been pulled? I DL'd it a while ago, but there seems to be a problem with ISO for the second disk. I've been everywhere on the 'Net, and can't find it anywhere....

New Printer suggestions request

I run Red Hat 7.3 and Windows 98 I don't do too much text printing but have a digital camera and do print pics on Glossy Photo Paper both 8.5 x 11 and 4 x 6 sizes. I expect to pay between $300 and $400 for a decent printer. At least as far back as Red Hat 7.1, when they tightened security and allowed you to configure ipchains-based firewalling right from the installer, many of the network services started through xinetd, and particularly those with security issues (like telnet, ftp, rlogin, rsh, and rexec) are no longer enabled by default. The ssh service (based on the OpenSSH implementation) is enabled by default, and is what they recommend you use instead of the alternatives. The "Connection refused" message above suggests that the service is disabled. If you aren't concerned about the security implications of enabling telnet, you can do it as follows for Red Hat Linux: chkconfig telnet on The chkconfig command is a convenient way to enable and disable init- and xinetd-based services. You can see what's enabled and what isn't as follows: chkconfig --list There's also the "ntsysv" command, which is a text-based GUI front end to this. It will present you with a merged list of both init- and xinetd-based services as a scrollable list, and allow you to select or deselect those to be enabled for the default set of run levels. It's not as flexible as chkconfig, but it is easier to use. -- Gilbert E. telnet question

I managed to get NFS working between one machine with Red Hat 7.3 (server) and another machine with Slackware 6.3 kernel 2.0.35 That is, it works when the server is not root. But what really puzzels me is telnet. I can ping from both machines with no trouble, but telnet only works when the server telnet's the client . Telnet fails when the Slackware machine trys to telnet the Red Hat machine. e.g. telnet 194.155.75.90 telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused Is the Slackware 6.3 kernel 2.0.35 telnet version just too old? Or is something in Red Hat keeping it from connecting? Security is not an issue here. This is just two home machines.
