I just took a peek at a RH 7.3 box, and came to the following conclusions: /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc is run when X is started. This file first checks for the existance of ~/.Xclients. If it exists, it is run Failing that, /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients is run. However, if it doesn't exist, fvwm2 is tried, followed by twm (not really an issue in Red Hat) /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients makes its decision about which desktop to run based on /etc/sysconfig/desktop. The line PREFERRED=GNOME or PREFERRED=KDE will make the default windowing environment GNOME or KDE respectively. You could also do "PREFERRED=twm" to have twm the default Finally, switchdesk copies the appropriate file from /usr/share/apps/switchdesk/ into your ~/.Xclients (and doesn't modify /etc/sysconfig/desktop as I had originally thought, sorry). So, in a nutshell, the rough order of things is: ~/.Xclients (manual, or by switchdesk) /etc/sysconfig/desktop (if it exists) GNOME KDE afterstep|windowmaker|mmaker fvwm95|fvwm|fvwm2 mwm|lesstif twm Sean - -- Sean A. Looking for a Calendering & Email solution to run with Unix and/or Linux

I am doing some prelimiary research on my own for a calendering and email solution for a large school division. They are currently looking into and Exhange box.... I hope to be able to offer another solution. Can anyone out there offer any suggestions? Thank you in advance for any help offered. Intel serves up Manitoba

Found at http://zdnet.com.com/2110-1105-932153.html: Intel is adding one more item to its menu of dishes for wireless cell phone makers. The company confirmed on Tuesday that the code name for the "Internet on a chip" processor it's been working on since last year is "Manitoba" and that it plans to announce the chip in 2002. Manitoba integrates flash memory, a digital signal processor, and an XScale processor core onto a single chip. It will be targeted at cell phone makers developing products for high-speed wireless networks, such as GPRS (General Pack Radio Service) networks. Manitoba will help in the development of phones that let users wirelessly access the Web and play audio files, as well as make basic phone calls. --Richard Shim, Special to ZDNet News [No word yet on why they chose "Manitoba".]

72 pin SIMM

Does anyone out there have any ancient 72 pin SIMM they don't need? I'd preferr a pair of 16 Meg chunks since this P 133 takes memory in pairs, but I'm interested in 8 or even 32 Meg chunks if there's two of them. I intend on using this powerful P 133 beast as an server for an LTSP network for a couple of 486s, just to see how LTSP works..

The meeting topic for this month is as follows: OpenBSD Network Security and VPNs Continuing with last month's presentation on OpenBSD, this month Shawn, Chris and Sean will be setting up an OpenBSD firewall. They will be talking about pf, the new firewall built into OpenBSD 3.0. Also discussed will be VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) and setting up an IPSEC VPN using OpenBSD's isakmpd. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30 PM on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Web Bugs

I've been reading an alarming article in 2600 "How to Regain Privacy on the Net" which mentions web bugs. There doesn't seem to be much defense against these little critters. I've checked http://freshmeat.net but there doesn't seem to be much there. Is there any software I can use in Linux to keep these web bugs off my computer, or to detect these bugs if they are already in it ?

According to the BBC web site; http://news.bbc.co.uk SuSE, Caldera, TurboLinux, and Connectiva have agreed upon a common core system, called United Linux, which should come into effect at the end of 2002. Red Hat has been invited to join.
