Thanks! and kudzu?

Thanks to the good advice I got from this roundtable I've got cdparanoi and cdrecord working just fine. Originally, cdrcord -scanbus showed nothing, but after I followed your instructions, all worked out OK. I got a couple of CDs ripped and burned and they play just fine. cdparanoia -v -s -B cdrecord -v speed=4 dev=0,1,0 -audio -pad track*.cdc.wav But a question or two about fstab Right now I've got: For my normal Creative cdrom /dev/sd0 /mnt/cdrom1 auto defaults,ro,noauto,usr,exec 0 0 For the OptoRite burner /dev/sd1 /mnt/cdrom2 iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0 The last one was created by Red Hat. What's kudzu ? I've read the man mount but there's no kudzu there. What does it do? .

RH 7.3 Valhalla - Wine

Todays snail mail of MUUGlines included an article on Wine. Does anyone know if this new and improved version of Wine is in the 7.3 install and if it is not, how easy/hard is getting Wine configured,up and running. Im mostly interested in running Quicken 2002 Deluxe. Other than eventually making a change to my D-Link router to accomodate any changes by my Cable ISP (Shaw), running Quicken and the hooking up with my daughter using my Intel Create and Share Computer Cam I don't have and need and certainly no desire to use M$ Windows. P.S. cdrecord dev

Thanks for the information on SCSI emulation in Red Hat. It's good to know I don't have to do anything about that. I've read the CD-writter Howto and the man cdrecord, but I can't figure out what to enter for the 'dev' argument for cdrecord. The example shows dev=0,6,0 But that's for a SCSI device and mine is ATAPI. My burner is /dev/hdc in fstab In the BIOS its a secondary master. In windoze its E for the cdrom part and F for the burner I'm trying to copy some old tape songs into a CD. The program rec and the Gnome mixer are excellent for getting the songs into .wav files. All I need to do now is get cdrecord going. cdrecord -v speed=4 -pad -audio dev=?,?,? Any ideas about dev ? Oh, you'll notice I'm using my new, id. For some reason, somebody didn't like 'author'

SCSI emulation in Red Hat 7.2?

Does Red Hat 7.2 have SCSI emulation in its kernel or do I have to install it myself? This is for burning CDs with cdrecord. For some strange reason, cdrecord only works with SCSI.

The ide-scsi driver has been included as a kernel module at least since RH 6.2, and auto-detection and configuration of an IDE CD-RW drive has been in the installer for about as long too. > For some strange reason, cdrecord only works with SCSI. Yeah, that may be just historical, since most of these devices were only SCSI-based at first, and there was reasonably flexible support for them using the generic SCSI driver (sg) in the kernel. The ATAPI (IDE) drives implement essentially the same SCSI command set, so the ide-scsi driver was a simple and reasonable kludge to get them to work without having to rewrite a whole bunch of applications. -- Gilbert E. Detillieux) The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 14. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: OpenBSD Installation Did your Linux machine just get hacked? Do you want to run an operating system that hasn't had a remote root exploit in four years? Try OpenBSD. It runs on Alpha, Intel, most Macs, SPARCs, and more. It has binary emulation for most UNIX operating systems including SVR4 (Solaris), FreeBSD, Linux, BSD/OS, SunOS and HP-UX. Shawn Wallbridge from Synack Hosting and Chris Lawson and Sean Cody from Tin Foil Hat will be installing OpenBSD 3.0 on a machine and explaining the process. They will explain the ports system, how to use it and talk a bit about packages, and finally how to keep the system up to date including CVS and patches. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30 PM on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Win2K Administration reference.

<FLAME FORCE FIELD> Having at least a minor grasp on Linux Server administration, now the evil dark forces have thrust Win2K upon me to look after as well. Since it is such a rare beast, is there a single book that is THE reference on Win2K administration (network services configurations, task automation, etc) ? I have looked at O'Reilly, MS handbooks, etc. Any testimontials from those supporting mixed servers on a network ? </FLAME FORCE FIELD> Brock

I am looking at building a high reliability, fault tolerant file server to store 300 plus GB worth of files. Reliability is needed b/c a sysadmin will not always be around/on-site to ensure full backups are made regularly. I am assuming RAID 5 array, for data and seperate drive(s) for OS (RH 7.x), redundant power supplies. Any suggestions (voice of experience) on: - Motherboard/CPU combo's - Server Cases - RAID host cards (3ware-IDE, Mylex-SCSI) - High(er) MTBF IDE, SCSI Hard drives (I don't want another 60/75GXP fiasco) <g>. - Tape drives (DLT, DAT, etc) Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.
