The people who contribute to Paul Eggert's IANA TZ database (https://www.iana.org/time-zones) are very obsessed with tracking this kind of thing. I recall there have been some interesting articles covering their work following the tinniest of jurisdictions. The new definition of "America/Winnipeg" was first mentioned on their discuss mailing list back on Thursday, the poster wasn't pleased with the rush: https://lists.iana.org/hyperkitty/list/tz@iana.org/thread/BDJE2JVAMXGLWND76D... The commit landed in their git repository yesterday: https://github.com/eggert/tz/commit/cd706278466a3ad431f0ad3934b5e771d72977ac This is not yet incorporated into a new release "version 2026e", but I can't imagine it will be long into that happens and that this will flow into current distros. Some distros may have already pulled the patch or will so do so prior to waiting for a release. For systems that don't anticipate being able to get the update or for folks who want to be proactive prior to an update, I think it may be possible to set yourself to being on permanent UTC-5 instead of the old definition of "America/Winnipeg". Apparrantly per that mailing list post "America/Panama" is already a permanent UTC-5 jurisdiction, but fixing oneself on that risks following future changes there! I have some diverse systems where I'll be rolling this, so maybe I'll follow-up on list when I've researched some commands to be on permanent UTC-5. The National Research Council has yet to update their website: https://nrc.canada.ca/en/certifications-evaluations-standards/canadas-offici... Hi All!
Perhaps a silly question. If I am running Linux in Manitoba, and relying, as it is, on NTP and TZ packages to get time for whatever. Log timestamps. Storage being in sync with compute.
Does the decision to do away with winter time affect my systems?
Where does TZ in RHEL clones like Alma comes from ? How does it get updated, i.e., any TZ authority out there to care what actually is Winnipeg/Northamerica wrt UTC starting come November?
