Oh, there it is. I tried that before, but I must have missed seeing the
libgd2-xpm.

I ended up going with this:

$ sudo apt-get install libgd2-noxpm

Reading state information... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
  libjpeg62
Suggested packages:
  libgd-tools
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libgd2-noxpm libjpeg62
0 upgraded, 2 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 308kB of archives.
After this operation, 885kB of additional disk space will be used.
