I ran across a pretty amazing hotrodder's page for the WRT54G at
http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/LinksysWrt54g.  People are producing 
alternate firmware, soldering on serial connectors, boosting the power 
output, and just generally violating the warranty every way they can think 
of.
