[*] codecs within asterisk

It really depends on your setup.
How much bandwith do you have, and how many accounts on your server,  
or how many users.
Ulaw give near telco quality, but uses more bandwidth.
I use it with 3mb down and 40k up, with about 25 accounts.
Works ok for me...as long as all accounts are not placing calls at the  
same time.
The other extreame is gsm.
It uses very low bandwidth, but the quality is not great... But it is  
usable.
