Here is a story regarding a hacked phone system being used to make
calls.

No mention of what the brand of phone system was (almost certainly not
Asterisk) but a cautionary tail none the less.

The Asterisk voicemail app does not have the ability to place outbound
calls so unless you have some other problem with your dialplan you
should be safe.
