[*] Comments about VoIP presentation at CIPS

My comments on the presentation are:

1) I agree completely with Bill's take on the difference between VoIP and
VoN where VoIP is contained within the corp lan or out as far as a managed
circuit to your provider and VoN is voice over the Internet.

2) It was an infomercial (but that can be expected)

3) There is merit to the underlying point. This telecommunication stuff is
essentially cheap and represents a small fraction of the costs of an
organization. Staff time is expensive. Anything that will make you more
productive will outweigh any argument on the costs of telecom. $50/month per
seat is equivalent to roughly 5 minutes a day/staff. This has been my
strongest argument to justify customer owned fiber.

Moral of the story - MTS marketing types must think VoIP is local loop
solution and not a replacement to the PSTN. A presentation from the
AllStream guys may have been quite different. VoN will eventually dominate
and will cost an insignificant amount of money compared to everything else
in an organization (how much do you pay for email today?). Look towards
features that VoIP can provide that are not possible via plain old POTS.
