Hey there -- a retired ham acquaintance I know is looking to do some work on exploring mesh networks and is looking for some 'older' (read: inexpensive) WRT-type routers that can be flashed with openwrt/ddwrt/etc ... If anyone has some lying around willing to part with them, let me know -- he's been looking for a while.
Thanks.

Make sure he checks that they're supported. Not all versions of the WRT54G are!

All except Revision 7.0 of the Linksys WRT54G's are... G2, GS, etc, I'm unsure about. But the straight G's are good to go except Revision 7.
