When the prompt disappears are you running under X-windows? Or just a virtual console? If it is under X-windows and you are running a font server it is likely that your ipchains is blocking port 7100 or 7200 where the font server usually listens. And, yes, strange things happen if the Xwindows server can't get to the fonts.
You might try changing to start up on runlevel 3 if you normally come up under runlevel 5 (Xwindows). Log on and test out your ipchains without Xwindows.

I've run programs to test the HD and the memory, and all pass fine. If I do an interactive startup, and select no for everything, I can use the system. Of course, I can't use XWindows, or access the network. I've looked through the logs, and can find nothing that screams out at me that something is wrong. However, being a newbie to Linux, that doesn't mean that it's *not* telling me something.
I've been trying to find documentation written at a level I can understand that explains what ipchains interacts with, what interacts with it, and what could cause problems like I'm having. So far, nothing..... :(
Latest attempt at a fix was to boot off the install CD, and "upgrade". It checked packages just fine, did all the fun stuff it does, and everything went swell. At this point, I'm confident in the hardware, and I suspect it lies somewhere in the software.
I've been told that if there's a problem with the xfont server, all sorts of funky things can happen. However, I've yet to find documentation to help me check this out...
I'll try to swap the HD to another running system, but I'm hoping that the hardware differences won't mess stuff up worse.....

Does the system truly hang or just your console? Can you ping it or telnet into it from somewhere else? If you find nothing in the system logs at all I would suspect you have a hardware problem. Likely bad memory somewhere.
Can you move the drive to another, known good, machine and test it?
