Has anyone any knowledge of running SteamVR games on Linux? I've read some stuff on Steam itself that says you can't run VR games on Steamdeck or Linux. But I've found some other sites saying you can, though maybe in a beta mode.
So who's right?
Half Life "3" (Alyx) is out (and on sale right now!) but I really only have a Linux game-capable rig now.
Also does SteamVR mean you *must* have VR gear to play? Or can you play it on a normal monitor setup?
I haven't tried SteamVR on Linux, but suspect that using it without a VR setup would be about as useful and enjoyable as browsing YouTube with a text-only web browser.
There's some offers on FB marketplace selling pretty complete and good condition HTC Vive VR systems around $350. Although with their age the controllers likely need a battery replacement, which involves detailed disassembly.

Thanks. Though I find it a bit hard to believe that Valve would release their HalfLife sequel as a VR-gear-only game?? Is there really that many gamers with a VR setup now? I guess I'm behind the times.
Sorry for resurrecting this thread from the dead but from what I can recall of my VR experience. OpenVR/SteamVR https://github.com/ValveSoftware/openvr has gotten a lot better but some games like VRChat https://hello.vrchat.com/blog/vrchat-security-update are still extremely jank. I know NO-VR HL:A https://www.moddb.com/mods/half-life-alyx-novr/news/half-life-alyx-is-on-sale-new-update-new-trailers is possible on the steam deck. It should be possible according to ProtonDB https://www.protondb.com/app/546560, you might need to put in some tweaks like....
-novid -safe_mode
or
-novid -safe_mode +hlvr_continuous_normal_speed 180 +hlvr_continuous_combat_speed 180
Used Vive's are good but if you are able to splurge get used index controllers if you can too. They are genuinely a game changer compared to the awful OG Vive controllers. If you have anymore questions or want me to test HL:A VR on linux just shoot me an email.

Hey thanks for the input. So you're saying playing it without VR is possible? That's cool. I kind of figured that, but the steam pages don't make this obvious(?).
If you have a way to test, that would be super, but don't knock yourself out, as I'll probably pick it up while on sale. Worst case is I've sunk the money into a game I can't play for a few years :-)
