Is it possible to find a reasonably-priced used machine to replace the above with a Core 2 Duo (or better, or AMD equivalent)? That is, if it's $400 for a used machine, I might as well spend a few bucks more and get something new.
Memory Express has refurbished machines for as low as $139 (see http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX45064), but no stock in Winnipeg.
Anyone got anything? It's for a retired couple, and I'd like to upgrade them from XP to Win7 and something a little faster.

I have something. Depends what you want. Motherboard/CPU/memory, or a complete tower with case, power supply, optical and hard drives? One motherboard set is Core2 Duo, the other is i5 quad core.

Something like this looks appropriate: http://dellrefurbished.ca/product/computers/desktops/optiplex/catcomdeskopti...
Core 2 Duo 3.0 GHz, 4 GB RAM, 160 GB HD, DVDRW, $193 (+tax+shipping, ~$252). Nice-looking case. I might replace the HD with a TRIM-enabled SSD to give them a better Win7 experience.

Before Trevor castigates me for recommending Dell desktops again... the small-form-factor desktops do NOT use a standard ATX power supply. Even the regular-sized desktops ship with a not-quite-ATX power supply, but most of the full-sized Optiplexes will accomodate a regular ATX PSU with a little bit of fiddling.
The Dell PSUs are of at least average quality overall, so it's not necessarily something you'll ever have to replace, but do keep it in mind. DFS does offer an optional 1-year warranty, and Optiplex PSUs are readily available on eBay, but particularly the small-form-factor PSUs can be expensive to replace... to the point where after the warranty expires, it will sometimes be cheaper just to buy a new computer.
YMMV. -Adam
