Tried but true method I guess .. but .. did anyone else get postal mail from domain.com (co-sponsored by google)? it is regarding their ad-words. (usual, sign-up by x-date and receive y-$'s in return for spending z-$'s).
Seems google wants to have companies with existing customer relationships to sell their adwords - several other companies are doing it with google too. No biggie if I already have some form of relationship with them... But, I have nothing to do with these 'domain.com' people - looks like they're just blasting out snail-mail to registered domain holders?

I've seen lots of snail and email from companies like that (especially DRoC) trying to steal business away by confusing end users. Usually their prices are outrageous. Beware!
Yes, both I and one particular customer of mine have gotten a lot of snailmail of this type, especially from DRoC (Domain Registry of Canada). DRoC adds the further deception of making their envelopes look similar to Government of Canada mailings - similar light brown envelopes and similar red maple leaf logo.
Since DRoC is actually located in Canada, I wish our federal authorities would crack down on them and put them out of business. Surely there must be some grounds on which to do this? - the deceptive envelopes and logo, the shady contents, etc. And CIRA, where are you when we need you? Can't DRoC be deregistered for ".ca" at least, due to unethical practises?

I know someone who used to work for the Fair Business Practices branch of Industry Canada. They investigate and prosecute stuff like that. They won't do anything unless they receive a complaint. If you want them to do something, put it in writing. Here's the website that describes how:
http://www.competitionbureau.gc.ca/eic/site/cb-bc.nsf/eng/h_00130.html
As for CIRA, they're also government so I assume they're the same.

I see that CIRA is very concerned about DRoC.

Thanks for the info, Bill ... Re-reading some of the info brings back memories (I wonder if I kept that letter somewhere :-)
While the domain.com mail-out of the google-sponsored ad-words is not enticing me to pay for renewal services, it is enticing me to pay $25 to get $100 worth of google-sponsored ad-words and is still slamming the domains by sending out unsolicited junk mail, as I've never dealt with domain.com. I am a bit surprised that google has associated itself with a company that does this type of marketing - that's my real surprise.

Google probably doesn't know the specifics. Domain.com would just be an affiliate getting paid on a CPA basis (the payout used to be $20 but that was without the coupon). What they're doing may or may not contravene their agreement with Google. Google may or may not care that they're spamming you with mail. Are they even breaking any laws?

Anyone can go to Google and sign up for their affiliate program. There might be some basic sniff tests, but once you're in, as long as there aren't too many complaints and your lead quality is acceptable, you can fly under the radar for quite some time. (My last job was at an affiliate marketing company... affiliates would try all sorts of things).

On a similar vein, have any of you been receiving e-mails from an organization called "The Strategic Council", asking you to complete a survey they claim to be on behalf of CIRA? The strategiccouncil.com is registered to someone in Toronto, but the survey is on researchnow.com which is registered in the UK. CIRA makes no mention of this survey on its web site, so the e-mail looks quite dodgy to me. I've gotten two of these so far and I've just ignored them.

I contacted CIRA -- they do use the Strategic Counsel (note the spelling) to conduct an annual satisfaction survey. Note, though, that the domain you mentioned is spelled differently and just points to a domain-for-sale page of some sort ... They also indicate it is random and it is possible that an individual would receive more than one request.
If you'd like to confirm the authenticity, CIRA has a nice on-line "type" session to ask questions directly to their support people ... or their 1-877-860-1411 number.

You're quite right, Dan. I was sloppy when I typed in the organization name and domain in my e-mail. It is indeed "counsel", not "council", in both. So it does seem to be legit after all. Funny they don't make things more obvious on their web site, or in the branding used in the e-mail, because it really looked suspect to me. With all the scams going on, especially those targeting domain owners, you'd think an organization with the wherewithal of CIRA would pay more attention to important details like that.
Anyway, thanks for contacting CIRA about this, Dan. I had thought about doing that myself, but had decided to just let it slide until the coincidental arrival in my inbox of this whole discussion thread and the second e-mail from the Strategic Counsel.

Yeah, I think we're looking at it the same way too -- it would be nice is CIRA (or whatever organization one belongs to) could do some form of *signing* on their surveys that can be authenticated via their own website ... sorta like a public key etc ... so that when the email comes out, one has the ability to confirm ...
on another (somewhat) relevant note -- they have actively supported dnssec development in the past -- and now, even google supports using it :-)
step in the right direction ... one .. step .. at .. a .. time ...
