In Fedora you can do something like that and make it work, rather than a reinstall with the "KDE spin". There will always be little tweaks and gotchas though, to get it set as the default, etc. One would guess you could do the same with Unbuntu, but I don't use Ubuntu so I can't speak to that (sorry).
At least you're not facing what I'm (still) facing: changing from Fedora 32-bit to 64-bit!
