Thanks Theo and Adam -- yeah .. these are a few X1's I have in the rack ... not sure why my 'purchased' adapter  is having issues ... the one I made up a year or so ago worked just fine, but it is not at my home where I can see it .. so I either lent it or lost it :-( ... 
not having much time to (nor spare parts that I can see) to craft up a home made one ... looking to borrow ...
